This morning, when I woke up I was sooo happy...i felt so shing fu (i don't know the correct phonetics way to spell that, but for those of y'all who speak mandarin i hope you know what i'm saying hehe)...y'all know why? it was because today is TUESDAY! we started out this wonderful schmonderful school week with NO MONDAY! i usually hate mondays...abhor, detest, absolutely can't stand them because I have class continuously from 11-5. =( but this week is going to be awesome, I can feel it in my bones, because there's no Monday! =) I had three classes today and NO discussions so I got to come home a bit earlier and run a bit at the gym...it felt good to get a good workout since it's been awhile since I've been to the gym. =P Hmmm...so this weekend was absolutely fantabulous! =) I just want to say HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to all of you! =) i hope it was a wonderful day for those of you who are attached and unattached. This was my first Valentine's day without a valentine since sophomore year and i thought it would be horrible, but i realized that I already have LOTS of valentines in my life! =P *big grin* i mean, if a valentine is just someone who you cherish and appreciate in your life, someone whose company you truly enjoy, then I am definitely blessed with many valentines. =) but yes...on friday i went back home to good old diamond bar and i saw how to lose a guy in 10 days! Kate Hudson is so beautiful...and matthew mcconaughey is such a sweetie! =) that movie was really cute, with a funny sense of humor too...for those of you guys who are grimacing at the thought of ANOTHER romantic comedy, I assure you that it's really not THAT bad! It is definitely one of the best out of its genre, and I know lots of guys (okay maybe two or three, but that's still a lot, considering!) who thought the movie was at least bearable! =) Hmm okay so then afterwards me and vince went to newport beach...the sky was sooo clear (well at least as clear as it can get down in la) and I finally saw Orion's belt! The three stars that are aligned in a row to make his belt...hehe shhhh...i'll let y'all in on a tiny secret...before, when people talked about Orion's belt and how it's the easiest constellation to see, I just kind of nodded and pretended like I knew what they were talking about...but I didn't...because I could never see it! =) so yeah friday was a monumental occassion just because I saw my first constellation! (i'm usually not great at spotting these, even when i squint my eyes lots and try REALLY hard to see a pattern in the stars...i just get kind of dizzy because I tilt my head back so much that I'm about to fall over) =X hehe... but hmm okay and then on SUNDAY simon came! =) billy, mike, lori and i went to sfo to pick him up and then we headed down to the wharf to get some yummie clam chowder, fish and chips, a big fat dreyer's waffle cone and some ghiradellhi! =) we also went to the dock and i tried to imitate the sounds of the sea lions yelping and screaming but they didn't seem to like it much...hehe those sea lions were so lazy...they seriously lead the greatest life, just soaking up the sun all day and diving in and out of seawater...mmm =) then for dinner we had ZACHARY'S....that place is seriously soooo good! I don't think that I ever understood fully what richard was talking about until I took my first big bite out of that yummie chicken and basil stuffed crust...mmmm...*contented grin*. Okay...and the rest of Sunday night was definitely a night to remember....let's just say that Christine is going to learn some self-control from now on and leave it at that. I seriously have THE BEST~ friends in the entire world...seriously, THE GREATEST....xoxoxoxo to all of y'all, you know who you are *wink * i love you guys! On another note...I'm thinking about studying abroad sometime next year or maybe senior year...and I kind of want to travel somewhere this summer too. Any ideas, y'all? I was thinking about Hong Kong, Paris, or somewhere in England....but then again, I could always go somewhere exotic, somewhere I would never dream of going regularly...like Brazil or the Netherlands or Chile or Sweden...ooooh the possibilities!!! =P I think travel is really awesome because you learn a lot about yourself and about the world as well. You start to perceive yourself in an entirely different way when you're thrown into an unpredictable situation in a foreign country, and I think it's a good shock we need to go through every once in awhile in order to really grow as people. Currently playing on my winamp (this is soooo random hehe): 1. Chantal Kreviazuk- Feels Like Home 2. Voices of Theory- Say It 3. Bob Marley- Could You Be Loved 4. Van Morrison- Brown Eyed Girl 5. Jay Chou (all songs) *hehe* 6. Coldplay- In My Place, the Scientist, Warning Sign (this is like THE greatest song) 7. Fuel- Shimmer 8. Gin Blossoms- Till I Hear it from you 9. Jack Johnson- Inaudible Melodies 10. The Calling- Adrienne ...okai and a bunch of chinese songs that i shall not put here...but sun yan zi's new cd is pretty good for those of y'all who were wondering! =P hehe okay well i shall go study now...later, alligators! by christine at 9:32 PM ©
So here I am, sitting in front of my computer, reading the above excerpt from "Hiroshima, Mon Amour" by Marguerite Duras, and the words strike me so deeply, yet I am completely unable to think of anything articulate to write for my french essay. For those of you who didn't take French in high school and aren't torturing yourselves by taking it in college, the above passage can be translated (though very poorly by christine =P) as follows: "His body became my own, I could no longer discern between the two. I had become the living antithesis of reason. And all the reasons that one could have to oppose this loss of reason, I had eliminated, swept away, surpassed. I had no patriotism but love itself." In context, the story is about Riva, a young heroine who lives in a french town called nivers that is occupied by german soldiers during world war ii. She falls in love with a german soldier, and on the day of the German surrender, she finds her lover dead by the river bank where they would often meet. Upon seeing his dead body, those are the words that she utters. It's such a sad story, and i've really kind of butchered it by just snipping an excerpt and putting it on my blog, but it was so beautiful that i just could not help but share it with alllllll of you guys! =) haha yes, christine is a nerd. I actually adore my French class, no matter how much i may complain about it. The hour in 104 Barrows every school day passes by sooo quickly for me in there that it makes me believe that one can actually enjoy learning! =) There's just something so intoxicating about learning a language and feeling it slowly become a part of you...the culture, the rhythms, the dialect, the diction, the very form of communication that is so different from your own. For those of you who have/are taking a language at University, i'm sure you know what i mean. After I leave French class everyday, the spokes to the wheels of my brain are still operating in le francais. But anyways, I digress! That quote just got me to thinking about people and situations and the bonds that we find ourselves in as time winds its irreversable spell around us. What you do today, what you say today, you can never take back...it's etched in the past from the moment that you've committed it. It's like...hmmm...it's like when you've shared a "moment" with someone. A glance, a knowing laugh, a warm smile, with someone somewhere who you've maybe just met, or who you've always said hi to but just never really talked to, or who you've known for a long time but never really connected with until that very moment...either way, when you go through this experience, this "moment" with that someone, its consequences are irreversable. From that point on, when you see that person, that forged connection between the two of you will be there. Human memory is a potent force. That's what makes our heartaches so hard to bear, but also what compels us to not only fall again, but to fall deeper, the optimism within us keeping us afloat above the tide of disillusion. Hah...all this because of a stupid French quote...but no, really...if only i were a better translator, i would be able to capture the true essence of what she's saying in that quote, and then you'd all see just how beautiful it is!! =) maybe after another year of study, eh? ;) Hmmm...so just as a short update to what's been going on in the boring life of christine lately...I kicked off the week on Monday with the most awesome dinner ever at our brand new super dc courtesy of Billy...(thanks! =P)...it's seriously like a HEAVEN in there...I was so enchanted that i think i'm going to treat richard and erika this monday! but no, seriously...they have awesome stir-fry, rotisserie chicken, REAL dessert (this like lemon meringue thing that was JUICY on the inside!), pizza right out of the oven, and a special of the day...PLUS, get this, REAL dreyer's ice cream! You can definitely taste the authenticity, this isn't like those yogurt kinds that we used to get at the ghetto dc! This is the real stuff, dudes...haha ok anyway but really, it was awesome! truly a once in a lifetime experience...the new freshmen have it SO lucky! =) okay so now that i just babbled on about FOOD for an entire paragraph...what was i saying? oh yes, my boring week...haha okay well besides falling devastatingly behind in class, i also went to the csa banquet on Friday with Julie, Erika, and Angela! I must admit, it was quite an experience... Okay, it's one in the morning already and I kind of want to get some work done (or am going to attempt to) so g'night, everyone! sweet dreams! I send hugs and kisses to you all~ =) or the special ones at least....hehe jk =P p.s. Just finished watching Grave of the Fireflies...that is seriously one of the saddest movies that I have seen in a long time. For those of y'all who haven't seen it...I think it's a really important movie to see, and it really opens your eyes to a lot of things. I mean, ultimately, it's still a movie, but it's a movie that makes a difference, a movie that compels you to re-examine everything in your life and illuminates what really matters. Anyway, before watching that, me, erika and rich decided to celebrate the turning of chinese new year with what else but...the JAY CHOU CONCERT!!! i must say...he is quite the sexy, sexy man! We turned off all the lights and simulated concert time in our dingy little living room...me with my nose almost pressed up to the tv screen and nearly swooning at the sound of Jay's incredible voice. So yes...that was quite the experience! It made me long to go to Jay's concert and see him live, to feel the tingles and the shivers and be within shouting distance of him (even if he might only be a white dot from where i'm standing) =P *dreamy sigh* I swear, I am almost tempted to move to Taiwan just so I can live in the same country as Jay Chou...taiwan is a pretty small place, think of the chances we have of meeting! =) hehe...okay that's my gushing for today, although on the chinese music update front...i must thank Ms. brenda yeh for the most fabulous chinese song ever! it's by shaun...i dunno his chinese name or anything, I don't even know his last name....but it's an AWESOME SONG. The more I listen to it the more i looooooove it! I loooove it almost more than tofu! =P Hmmm...so last night the usual gang (minus Angela, who we all missed!! =T ) went to the ksa party at la val's! It was an....interesting experience, to say the least. =) All that I have to say to julie is that you're ten times luckier than I am, no matter what you think! At least there is a "pillar of strength" in your approachable vicinity now...*wink wink*...and THANK YOU THANK YOU erika shao and brenda yeh for being awesome pseudo moms...i love you guys~ hehe =) hmm so this past week has been pretty hectic with class and everything...i'm kind of just waiting for things to settle down and such so i can get into the old groove again. lol i sound like such a dork =P hehe...but yeah i had a lot to blog....but now I kinda lost my train of thought. =( so i shall continue tomorrow...for now good night y'all...sleep tight and happy chinese new year! =) by christine at 4:16 AM ©
